Recycled Gardening Week 7

Hi Parents and Caregivers,

As part of our topic 'Green Fingers' Room 22 is learning to make a plant holder out of recycled materials. We all provided a recycled item to make our plant holder out of. Some items we decided to make our plant holders out of were: a lamp shade, a wooden box, a blender jug, a cardboard box and milk bottles. Today we put soil in them and planted our sweet peas seed. We have decided the seeds need: water, sunlight and soil. For the last two weeks of school we will be looking after our seeds at school. Hopefully they all grow.

We are learning to write letters in the correct format. We will be publishing the letters on special writing paper and posting them off to Santa. "Send a letter to Santa

Ho, ho, ho from Santa’s workshop...send a letter to Santa this Christmas, and he will write back.

Hi kids!

It's nearly Christmas time so be sure to write to me and tell me what you want this year. All you have to do is fill in the form below by Friday 14 December and I'll send you a letter through the mail in return! Be sure to fill in your correct address too.

Or, if you want to put pen to paper, write me a letter using your favourite stationery, put it in an envelope and stamp it then post to my postal address below. Don't forget to include your name and full postal address!

Santa Claus
Santa's Workshop
North Pole 0001

Be sure to check your letterbox for my letter closer to Christmas - and remember to leave some cookies and warm milk next to your fireplace on Christmas Eve....yum, my favourite!

Merry Christmas,
Love from Santa Claus"

West Lynn Gardens Trip 22.11.12

 Hi Parents and Caregivers,

Today was Room 22's trip to West Lynn Gardens. We really enjoyed the day and would like to say a big thank you to the parents who helped on the trip.

During the day at West Lynn Gardens we had activities to do with the topic 'Green Fingers'. Our activities were:

1. Design and draw a garden made out of recycled materials. We all designed this in our topic books and then presented it to the class. Most of us learnt to use our loud teacher voice :).

2. We went into the butterfly house and had to sketch a chrysalis, a caterpillar, a weed, an unusal flower, two different shaped leaves, and we got to choose one thing we found interesting in the butterfly house to draw.

3. We went on a scavenger hunt around the gardens and find: an ant, a butterfly, a flower bud, a seed pod, garden tools, a compost bin, a garden sculpture, red leaves, yellow flowers, a pine cone, a leaf the size of our hands, a worm, a weed, a ladybug, a pine cone, a feather, a clover leaf, a vine, a daisy, a fruit, The letter w, a bumble bee and a birds nest.

4. Having lunch (YUM YUM).

And finally at the end of the trip we walked back to school. What a good day!

We have been learning how to weave (Raranga) in Room 22 as part of our Maori Language Plan. As a class we practised first with paper and in a few weeks we will try with flax (Harakeke). Our final results were amazing and we are proud to display them in our classroom. Below is some photos and an explanation of how Harakeke is like a whanau (Family).
